The Theory of Music

The Theory of Music is a course designed for all levels and experience. With a one-on-one online lesson adaptation of core principles of music theory, each eight-week session will tailor to the goals of each student and impart a holistic understanding of music.

Youth Program:  In this skills-based course, students learn the practical skills necessary for every young musician. Learn techniques through written assignments, aural skills, sight-singing exercises, basic keyboard training, and composition, and other creative projects. Best suited for ages 10+

Adult Program:  The goals for this course include the following topics: to learn the fundamentals of music, develop skills for composing music, gain a deeper understanding of harmony, melody, form, and to be equipped with the tools for fundamental analysis of baroque through contemporary music.

Tuition:  8, thirty-minute sessions
$320 - Current student add-on: supplemental sessions for a private lesson, group classes, or ensemble students 
$440 - Students studying Music Theory only

NOTE: Students may sign up for 30, 45, or 60-minute lessons. Minimum enrollment is 8 sessions for the semester. You can discuss additional lessons at the time of enrollment.

About the Music Theory Instructor, David Stevens:

Mr. Stevens is currently an instructor of saxophone and clarinet at ANMS and applied faculty at Gordon College. He completed a Masters Degree in Music Theory (2016) at the New England Conservatory and has applied his theoretical skills as a writer for the Boston Musical Intelligencer; music assistant to composers’ Robert Honstein, Christopher Cerrone, Stratis Minakakis and others; teachers’ assistant to Deborah Stein (Tonal Theory) and Ran Blake (Contemporary Improvisation); and founding advisor to the Gunther Schuller Society. As an educator, he has tutored theory students from elementary school to doctoral candidates.
